Simple & Special Ideas for Celebrating Birthdays in the Classroom

Celebrating birthdays in the classroom is a big deal to kids! As teachers, we want to make sure they feel special on their birthday and create memories that’ll last forever, without breaking the bank or taking a ton of time and effort to prepare for. Oftentimes, it’s the things that cost the least that mean the most – the things that make them feel truly special, valued, and loved. In this blog post, I’m sharing simple and special student birthday ideas from teachers like you to help you celebrate your students on their big day!

Teacher Ideas For Celebrating Birthdays in the Classroom

Does anyone know how to make kids feel special while also being savvy, creative, and keeping the chaos in order quite like a teacher? I think not! They’re the best of the best when it comes to things like that! I asked the teachers in my online community on Facebook and in my Saddle Up For 2nd Grade Teachers Group how they celebrate student birthdays in their classroom, as I’m looking for some new ideas to try with my own students, and they didn’t disappoint! Check out their student birthday ideas below! You can also find some of the student birthday ideas, supplies, and decor linked in my Amazon storefront here.

Birthday Decor

I have birthday pins (from Dollar General) they get to wear.
– Kimberly

Birthday cover on their chair, play Kidz Bop birthday song, showcase birthday screen during morning meetings, give a happy birthday pencil and happy birthday note.
– Margaret

I have a sign they hold up and I take a picture and post it to my Class Dojo and we sing.
-Star

I personally love decorating a special birthday chair to keep in my classroom! On that student’s special day, they get to sit in the birthday chair all day long! You can decorate it however you’d like, but I used paint and stickers to decorate mine.

Birthday Bag and Student Birthday Chart

I make birthday bags full of goodies. Then I hang them on a bulletin board and give them to students when it is their special day. It gives them something to look forward to.
-Jean

I give a birthday bag to my students. It has just some small items in it that I usually get from Amazon that matches our school theme for the year.
-Harriet

Birthday placemat on their desk for the day. A birthday bag that has an out of uniform pass, birthday pencil, birthday sticker, birthday water bottle sticker, and a birthday bracelet. We also sing happy birthday before snack since most bring a treat for the class.
-Amber

-Paulette

Student Birthday Cards From Teacher

The birthday person has a sticker to wear and a card signed by all classmates.
-Noreen

I make a giant card and have all the students sign it. I also have a birthday sign that they get to hold and I take their picture. I give them a small goodie bag.
-Bethany

Birthday Day

At the start of the year, I request no birthday snacks be sent in. I instead do a Birthday Day in the last month of school. We have a whole class party where we write invitations to other staff, make their own birthday crowns, have a dance party, sing happy birthday, and blow out candles. That way we celebrate everyone’s birthday regardless of whether it falls on a weekday/school day.
-Courtney

I encourage parents to bring in a book to read during mystery reader that week. A stuffy in their desk for the day that I call “birthday bear.” I have multiples in case of shared birthdays. A baggie with a treat (cookies or chips for snack), a  homework pass that says “eat cake” instead, a pencil, bookmark, and a mini sharpener. We also do the Koo Koo Kangaroo birthday song or when we miss a birthday because of break, we do Very Merry Unbirthday.
-Julie

I love the idea of having an entire birthday day where that student gets to feel special! This doesn’t have to just be about “stuff” either. You can let them pick the brain break, choose a read aloud book, pick their seat, choose where to start math centers, etc! You can also have students go around the room and share a kind word or positive affirmation about the birthday student.

Celebrate Summer Birthdays

This year for summer birthdays, we had a day in May when the students could bring in one topping for an ice cream sundae. I supplied the ice cream and brought a few toppings.
-Cassandra

We celebrate June birthdays on a Friday in May. Then, July birthdays on another Friday in May, so everyone feels special.
-Kimberly
