Why Use a Math Warm Up?

Think of a math warm-up like stretching before a workout—it gets your students’ brains moving and shifts them into “math mode.” And the best part? It’s the perfect chance to review past skills, catch misconceptions early, and build student confidence without needing a formal lesson plan.

Warm-ups set the tone for your entire math block. When done right, your students will be more focused, more engaged, and ready to tackle whatever you’ve got planned next.

What is a Number Web?

A Number Web is a simple, low-prep activity that requires almost nothing. Seriously—all your students need is their:

  •  math journal or or white board
  • a pencil, or a dry-erase marker

Here’s how a number web works:

  1. Have students write the numbers 1–10 randomly around their paper.
👉 Want to differentiate? Use numbers up to 20, or switch to multi-digit numbers for a challenge.
  2. Once their numbers are written, they’ll connect two numbers with a straight line and write either an addition or subtraction fact on the line.
    • Example: Draw a line from 2 to 8 and write “2 + 8 = 10.”
    • Continue building out connections to create a full “web” of math facts.
  3. The only rule? No drawing lines through other numbers. All lines must be straight, and you can’t overlap existing numbers.

That’s it! You can set a timer for 3–5 minutes and let them go wild creating their own web of facts. It’s super engaging, promotes number sense, and honestly feels like a game to them.

This activity is flexible and can support students in basic addition, subtraction, or multiplication.

Want to keep it fresh? Change up the number range or the operation each day. You can even make it a partner game!

Try It Tomorrow—With Zero Prep

The best part about Number Webs is how easy they are to start using. You don’t need fancy materials or complicated directions. Just grab some paper or a math journal, and your students are ready to dive in. You can even use this activity as a transition after morning work, before jumping into a full lesson, or as a brain break when kids need a reset. Whether you’ve got five minutes or fifteen, Number Webs are a flexible warm-up that can be used over and over again without getting boring.
