How to Create a Meaningful Math Around the World Adventure in 8 Centers

If you’ve ever wanted to have a Holidays Around the World celebration in your classroom, but ditched the idea because it felt overwhelming to plan for, find activities for, and actually carry out, I feel you. Teachers always love the idea of it (and students do enjoy the activities), but the stress of putting it together and managing it can put a damper on it. But I have good news… this is finally going to be the year you do it, because I’m here to help!

I created a Math Around the World Adventure resource to help you create a smooth, manageable, and super meaningful experience your students will be talking about for months (maybe even years!). In this blog post, I’ll walk you through exactly how to set it up for holiday learning success!

Why Math Holidays Around the World Activities?

Teachers often tell me that December is the hardest month to keep students focused. And as a classroom teacher myself, I can attest to this. Whoever coined the term “May-cember” was spot on!

That’s why I created these holidays around the world activities, to turn this challenging season into a real learning opportunity and adventure for your students!

With 8 holiday-themed math centers from countries around the world, your students will be immersed in hands-on activities while spiraling key math skills like:

  • Adding 3 numbers
  • Subtraction within 20
  • Place value
  • Comparing & ordering numbers
  • Skip counting
  • 2-digit addition & subtraction (no regrouping)

The 8 different countries included are:

  • United States
  • Canada
  • England
  • France
  • Italy
  • Germany
  • Australia
  • Mexico

Holidays Around the World Activities

And what makes this activity super fun is the Math Around the World passport, to help students track where they’ve traveled and stay motivated and accountable the entire time.

How to Set Up Your Math Travel Stations

The Math Around the World resource pack includes 8 ready-to-go centers, one for each featured country.

Here’s the simplest way to set up an engaging Holidays Around the World adventure:

1. Choose 8 spots around your classroom.

Choose 8 spots around your classroom to represent each country.

This could be:

  • Table groups
  • Floor spaces
  • Kidney table
  • Rug zone
  • Countertop station

2. Set up your countries.

Place the following at each station:

  • The math game or holidays around the world printables for that country
  • Directions page (included in the resource!)
  • Recording sheet
  • Any manipulatives students may need
  • A passport “stamp” or marking tool

💡 Teacher tip: Keep everything in a gallon ziptop bag or small tub. This makes clean-up and reset quick and easy (and ensures nothing gets lost).

How to Manage the Passport System (So Students Stay Focused)

The Math Holidays Around the World passport doesn’t only make the entire experience fun and realistic, but it also doubles as your secret classroom management tool.

Here’s how to make it effective:

1. Have students color or label their passports ahead of time.

This builds excitement, sets expectations, and gives you a calmer start to the adventure.

2. Model how to mark off a country.

Whether you use stamps, stickers, or simple check marks, consistency helps the rotation run smoothly.

3. Require completion before stamping.

Students must finish their recording sheet or activity before marking their passport. This creates instant accountability, no more rushing just to move on.

4. Keep the passport with the student, not the station.

This ensures nothing gets lost and helps you track who has visited where.

Tips for Smooth Transitions

Transitions can make or break a rotation, especially a fun holiday-themed one.

Here’s a few of my top tips to make transitions smooth, calm, and quick:

Use a timer the entire class can see.

Set your rotation time (~10 minutes works well depending on grade level). When students know exactly how much time they have left, they stay on task.

💡 Teacher tip: Display the timer on your whiteboard so students can see how much time is left during the center.

Use the same signal every time.

A chime, bell, or call-and-response works well to signal to students that it’s time to head to another country.

Model and practice the transition routine:

  • Stop
  • Tidy
  • Rotate

Build in one “catch-up” rotation.

Not every student will finish every activity at the same pace. Allow for one rotation at the end for students to return to any unfinished station.

Have early finishers create a reflection.

For early finishers, have them use the extra time to create a reflection from their trip, writing or drawing about their favorite country and what they learned there.
