Math Apps for Learning How to Count Money

Teaching students how to learn to count money is one of my favorite activities. Use math apps to your advantage to reinforce money skills!

Teaching students how to learn to count money is one of my favorite activities. Students love the hands-on lessons within our money unit, but with an increase in credit card purchases, students are seeing paper bills and coins less and less in their everyday lives. What is a math teacher to do? Use technology to your advantage! Kids love electronics so why not use math apps to our advantage that can reinforce money skills!

1. Peter Pig’s Money Counter

This app includes 3 games. One game helps students identify coins, another allows students to count money, and the last game tests students ability to determine which coin has a least or greater value when compared to another.

This app teaches saving skills, has a virtual piggy bank, and allows students to spend their “money” dressing up their own pig.

This app is free and is available on iOS and Android.

2. Counting Bills & Coins

This app has five different features or games. Students can choose to play with just coins or bills and coins up to $20. This app uses U.S. currency with three different difficulty levels. Students can practice various skills such as dragging money to give customers change for their purchases or matching amounts.

It is also available in Spanish and is free for iPhone users!

This app includes 2 different modes, three currencies, and 200 levels. Learning mode is like the traditional classroom where arcade mode gamifies learning with a countdown timer where students can challenge their friends. This app is similar to others listed, but does not allow third party advertisements within the app, so students can focus on learning.

It is available on Apple and Android for .99

7. Count Money !

This app was designed to be used on ipads. In this app students progress through different levels with increasing difficulties as they master counting money. The difficulty and level can be set in the menu of the app to differentiate learning for each student.

8. Boom Cards

Teaching students how to learn to count money is one of my favorite activities. Use math apps to your advantage to reinforce money skills!

The “Boom Cards” app is an extension of “Boom Learning” that allows your students to practice educational skills on-the-go. The nice thing is that that app connects to your Boom Learning classroom no matter where you’re at.

This app is available on all Apple and Android devices for free.

These Money Counting Coins to $1.00 Boom Cards are the perfect way to review money. They are interactive, self-checking, and engaging!

As you can see, there are many apps out there to help students identify, count and exchange money. Despite the decline in using paper money in real life, students can still learn to count money and recognize it. One way to encourage students to use money in their everyday life is to purchase and use a piggy bank.
