This year the standards (TEKS) in Texas changed in math. One of the big changes for 2nd grade is with place value. Before, we were required to teach up to 999. Now we teach up to 1,200. I knew I needed some new material to work with so I got busy whipping up my latest unit. Let me just say that I’m a tad bit excited about it. I want to use it tomorrow but I’ll have to wait a few more weeks. I’ve been saving this super cute clip art from Graphics from the Pond for months and finally found a use for it.
Introducing Popping into Place Value! This unit goes up to 1,500. I didn’t want to go to far above 1,200. I really want to focus on mastering the skill rather than large numbers. All of the activities include a color and black and white version. There are task cards, centers, flip books, hands on activities to get the students up and moving, activity sheets, a craftivity and more!
One of my favorite activities in the unit is this place value booklet. It is perfect for introducing or reviewing place value. It includes pages with number form, written form, and expanded notation.
Task cards are MUST in my classroom. I use them for everything. We love iSpy and scoot. They are used in small groups and centers. So of course I had to include some. The first set is with base ten blocks and comes with two different recording sheets. Then second set is mystery picture riddles. I wouldn’t use these until the skill has been completely mastered.
I’m really trying to focus on math stations this year. I wanted to include lots of activities to keep my kiddos busy while I’m working with small groups. Popcorn fight is just like war. They will battle it out to see who can make the biggest number. We always play this with 3 digit numbers and its a big hit. I’m hoping this will be the same.
I just had to throw a little craftivity in there. I just love how this one turned out. I can’t wait to get them made in a few weeks. Who doesn’t love popcorn?!?
Here is a closer look at the entire unit.
But wait! I have a FREEBIE for you! Grab the place value booklet show above for FREE in my TPT store! Click here or on the picture to get it.
I have a feeling I’m going to be very hungry when I teach this unit!
