Focus On Establishing Routines

Routines and procedures are key during the first two weeks of school, and these back to school math lesson plans help teach and reinforce the routines you’ll have during your math block all year long. From using anchor charts and interactive notebooks to working with manipulatives and doing hands-on activities, each day’s lesson plan will help your students get used to the math routines in your classroom.

Discover Being a Mathematician & Explore Prior Knowledge

These back to school math lessons also help students discover that they are all mathematicians and just what makes them so. With anchor chart templates, graphic organizers, and interactive notebook activities for math journals, students will think about what makes a great mathematician and what characteristics of a mathematician they already have. They’ll also explore prior knowledge by thinking about what they know and what they want to learn in the upcoming year.

Math Tools vs. Toys

One of the most exciting parts of math is all of the amazing math tools that students get to use as they learn and explore. During the first two weeks of school, it’s important that students understand the difference between math tools and toys. These math lesson plans come with a math tools vs. toys sorting activity and interactive notebook activity. This encourages them to think about how they might use those math tools to solve problems in math class and the real world.

Learn About Math Manipulatives

Once students understand math tools vs. toys, it’s time for them to learn about math manipulatives and the different ways that they can use them in the math world. This teaches them responsibility and the proper way to use their math manipulatives. These math lesson plans come with a PowerPoint activity to introduce students to 20 different manipulatives and explain what they are and how they can be used. Then, they’ll review what they’ve learned with a true/false pocket chart sort and hands-on activity to help them explore and work with each manipulative.

Create a Math About Me

The next part of the back to school math lesson plans is the math about me activity. This is always a student favorite (and a teacher favorite too!). This is great for getting to know each other and build community. Students will complete a math about my teacher activity and then move onto a math about me activity, where they share fun facts about them using numbers! This activity has multiple grade level options to work for 1st-3rd grade students.

Review Skills With Manipulatives

Last but not least, students will review key math skills using manipulatives, such as pattern block puzzles, a graphing activity, and an addition and subtraction color by code. This wraps up the first two weeks of math lesson plans and has students prepared to dive into your regular math lessons and routines.
