Math Apps for Addition and Subtraction

Math is not taught the same way it was when we were kids, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing! Using hands-on manipulatives is a great way to start introducing students to the concept of what regrouping looks like. Using technology to help reinforce math facts and practice regrouping skills can be a good thing! There are a few math apps for addition and subtraction out there that I want to share with you today.

1. Splash Math: 2nd Grade Learning Games

This is an awesome new app that offers a variety of math skills through fun & engaging games. Splash Math is available in multiple grade levels, but for the sake of this blog post, I’m sharing the 2nd grade version. This app covers a wide variety of concepts including number sense, add & subtract within 20, add & subtract within 100, and place value! It also includes an explanation for wrong answers and virtual rewards & games.

The app offers a free 7 day trial period and then $9.99/mo after that. It is available for iPhone or iPad usage.

2. Math Champions

Quick brain games for kids come with this app! It features 10 fun games while practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication, divisions and comparisons. There is also a follow up of the score for several players!

There is a paid version which is $1.99 that is available for iPhone and iPad, but there is also a lite version which is free! The free version comes with 2 games rather than 10, but still focuses on the same math concepts.

3. Vegetable Maths Masters

This is a free app for kids to practice their basic math facts while playing games using vegetables. Not only are you encouraging students to memorize math facts, but you are also creating a positive connotation when it comes to veggies! This app is designed to support math fluency, but also encourage healthy eating among children!

It can be downloaded on Android, iPad, or iPhone and is free! By using this app, students will be able to practice their regrouping strategies by adding and subtracting vegetables together.

4. Math Bakery Regrouping

This particular app includes 14 games that vary with difficulty using numbers all the way up to 999. It is the perfect tool to practice column addition and subtraction with regrouping! Instant feedback is given if students get a problem incorrect. There are also options to challenge other players or have a dual mode where you can challenge others instantly!

This app is $2.99 and is available in the Apple store to use with an iPhone or iPad!

5. Sumaze! Primary

This app allows primary learners to explore a variety of mathematical concepts! Not only can students practice addition and subtraction, but they can also practice memorizing even and odd numbers, as well as, finding patterns and more! This puzzle game is specifically aimed at little mathematicians.

It can be downloaded on an iPhone or iPad and is free to use!

6. Marble Math Jr.

Marble Math Jr. allows students to solve math problems while completing a variety of engaging mazes! This app is based on the Common Core Curriculum and focuses on skills such as sequencing, shape recognition/matching, counting money, and completing addition equations. One of the great things about this app is that it does allow math problems to be read aloud to students!

This app is available in the Apple store, as well as, in Google Play for Androids! It is a paid app at $3.99.

7. Sushi Monster

Sushi Monster is a FREE math game from Scholastic’s Houghton Mifflin company! This company is well-known for their informative textbooks that many school districts use around the world. This app focuses on strategies for whole number addition by helping monsters make target sums! Students practice making a correct equation in order to feed the monster and advance to the next level.

This app is free to use and is only available in the Apple Store!

8. Zapzap Math

This app is for K-6 learners who want to go on a math adventure! Students enter a universe with over 180 game while traveling to different planets to complete a variety of challenges. This app covers a wide variety of mathematical topics including addition, subtraction, time, and measurement!

Zapzap math is free and available for both iPhone and Android usage!
