Creepy Carrots Activities | Halloween Reading Fun

If you know me, you know that I’m all about a good theme. One of my favorite books to read my students all year long is Creepy Carrots, by Aaron Reynolds. In fact, I love it so much that I’ve created an entire comprehension and vocabulary mini unit to go along with it. Read on to get a sneak peek at these Creepy Carrots activities so you can add some Halloween reading fun to your lesson plans!

Creepy Carrots Book

I’m a big fan of read alouds, so whenever I can add a fun seasonal story to our lesson plans to help my students practice key skills, I’m sold!

I discovered Creepy Carrots on a whim several years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since! Now, it’s a staple in my October read aloud rotation and my students look forward to our Creepy Carrots mini unit every year.

The book Creepy Carrots is about a rabbit named Jasper who LOVES carrots, until one day “creepy” carrots start following him everywhere (or so he thinks)!

This is a super cute book that also teaches students a great lesson about not being too greedy.

It isn’t exactly a “Halloween” book, but it is perfect for this time of the year. The illustrations by Peter Brown pair perfectly with this hilarious story and bring the “creepy” carrots to life!

Creepy Carrots Activities

In my Creepy Carrots mini reading unit, you’ll find a variety of comprehension and vocabulary activities to use alongside this silly story. These Creepy Carrots printables are designed to help your students focus on a different comprehension skill each day.

Vocabulary Activities

The unit kicks off by introducing students to new vocabulary words that will be found throughout the Creepy Carrots book. Students will use the vocabulary cards to complete their Creepy Carrots vocabulary foldable, which they will glue in their reading interactive notebook.

My students always love to learn the word “sinister” and they use it a lot in their writing activities after they know the definition.

Story Elements and Sequencing

Next up, we review the story elements with a graphic organizer and add it to our reading journals. After that, we complete a story sequencing cut and paste activity to help students map out the story from start to finish. This is a great way to review the story and it’s elements as well.

ABC Order

We bring in a little spelling and vocabulary practice with the ABC order Creepy Carrots printable included in the unit. Students write all of the vocabulary words in ABC order on their recording sheet.

Cause and Effect

Cause and effect is a reading skill we work really hard on in second grade, and this story is perfect for practicing that! Students will match the cause and effect situations from the story on their recording sheet.

Comprehension Task Cards

During our reading small groups, we use these comprehension task cards to review the story. I encourage my students to answer the questions using complete sentences, so this activity is a great way to practice that.

Book Report Craft

To wrap up the Creepy Carrots mini unit, we make these super fun book reports and “creepy” carrot craft. On their book report, students must complete the story elements, tell their favorite part of the story, list a new word they learned and define it, and rate the book on a scale of 1-5 carrots.

Then, they make their very own creepy carrot character to hang beside their book report. I love how excited my students get for this activity and they do such a great job of working independently on it.
