Although I mainly focus on 2nd grade guided math curriculum, I wanted to do something a little different and share some exciting activities I used to do with my 1st & 2nd grade students for Johnny Appleseed Day. This is such a fun topic for students and it seems like a seasonal theme makes everything more enjoyable! I’m sharing some of my favorite comprehension activities for teaching Johnny Appleseed, from printables to digital activities and a FREEBIE!
Johnny Appleseed Comprehension
If you are looking for something quick, easy, fun, and engaging to teach your students all about who Johnny Appleseed (aka John Chapman) is this activity booklet is exactly what you need! There are several different types of graphic organizers included where students can practice their writing skills. They will have a chance to work on their alphabetical order proficiency, practice using adjectives as describing words, as well as, creative thinking!
My favorite part of this unit is a comprehension mini-reader and flipbook that kids can create to go with their work. In the 7 page booklet, students can complete a KWL chart as well as reading comprehension short stories all about Johnny’s life.
Each page contains comprehension check questions at the bottom, as well as, 10 true or false questions at the end.
After completing the All About Johnny Appleseed booklet, have your students create this flipbook to demonstrate what they learned. Because there are so many different activities included, you can have kids complete them as morning work, whole group, or as word work in your reading stations.
Here is a breakdown of each section activity included in the flipbook:
- Who Was Johnny?
- Describing Johnny
- What did Johnny do?
- Facts I Learned
- Writing Page
There is also a digital version to use with Google Slides and Google Classroom. The digital version is exactly the same as the print version. You’ll get both the booklet & flipbook in print and digital!
